Tools
Engineer

Playable Worlds is looking for a tools software engineer to help design and write both client and server-side world creation tools and pipelines. This individual will be primarily focused on front-end development of tools such as script editing, world and object definitions and layout editors, and behavior-driven artificial intelligence and cellular automata management tools. They will also work to integrate these game-specific tools with the main game engine and back-end game server in a way that enables rapid prototyping and quick production cycles. This individual, reporting to the Lead Client Engineer, will work closely with multiple disciplines including game design, art direction, and both front and back-end engineering teams. They should be self-motivating, inquisitive, customer-focused, interested in trailblazing, and excited to tackle interesting technical challenges that have not been attempted in massively multiplayer online games before.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience, preferably in the games industry.

  • 3+ years of experience writing complex tools aimed at internal development customers, preferably based around a high-performance engine like Unreal, Unity, Frostbite, or similar.

  • Familiarity with various analytics and reporting suites such as Google Analytics, AWS Kinesis, Splunk, or similar.

  • Deep familiarity with continuous integration-based build pipelines, concepts, and tools.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interface directly with artists, designers, and other engineering leads.

Desired Qualifications:

  • At least 2 shipped game titles, preferably with at least 1 being in multiplayer gaming.

  • Familiarity with embedded scripting engines and editing tools, behavior-based artificial intelligence, or cellular automata simulations a plus.

  • Familiarity with cloud-based server architectures and persistent socket networking requirements a plus.

Gameplay
Engineer

Playable Worlds is looking for a gameplay software engineer to help design and write gameplay and world simulation systems for a massively multiplayer online game. This individual, reporting directly to the CTO, will work closely with the lead designers and back-end / server lead engineer to develop a gameplay scripting language and toolset, and use it to write core gameplay and world simulation mechanics that drive a vibrant, living, online world. This individual should be self-motivating, inquisitive, interested in trailblazing, and excited to tackle interesting technical challenges that have not been attempted in massively multiplayer online games before.

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience in the video games industry.

Senior Technical Animator

Playable Worlds is seeking a talented Senior Technical Animator for our San Diego game studio. In this role, you’ll work for the Studio Art Director creating animation for large interactive worlds, create advanced animation solutions and pipelines, and work with 3D rigged assets. You’ll work with front-end engineering teams and designers to develop techniques and tools for massively multiplayer world and asset creation. You’ll be responsible for rigging and animating meshes which effectively develop and communicate the persona of in-game characters. As an early hire at this newly formed company, you’ll be an integral part of a diverse company culture founded on our passion for gaming and dedicated to creating an open and transparent, family-friendly work environment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in game development animating and rigging characters using industry-standard software like Maya, Substance, and ZBrush.

  • 2D and 3D experience in art production tools like Photoshop, Maya, 3DSMax, ZBrush, as well as Unreal, Unity, or similar high-performance game engines.

  • High skill in rigging and animating human, quadraped, and bipedal characters and animals, as well as non-creature forms.

  • Strong knowledge of traditional animation techniques in addition to working knowledge of large, scalable multiplayer games.

  • Highly motivated with good communication skills, and a great team-player attitude to interface directly with designers, tools developers, and engineers.

  • Must have portfolio link on resume with examples of latest work and accomplishments.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with motion capture data and advanced animation tools such as Motion Builder and Scripting.

  • Facial animation and real-time engine tool solutions experience.

  • Technical proficiency and understanding of various high-performance game-engine strengths and limitations.

  • Keyframe animation experience for complex vehicles, props and actors with believable movement and personality.
